Public Works - What We Do

The City of La Salle Public Works Department consists of five divisions: Streets, Water Distribution, Water Treatment, Wastewater Treatment, and Building & Grounds. The Superintendent of Public Works, Patrick Watson, directly supervises all Public Works operations and manages the overall direction of the Department and coordinates its operations with other Departments in the city. Water Distribution

This division is responsible for the following duties:

  • Pothole patching
  • Street sweeping
  • Catch basin cleaning
  • Dead animal disposal
  • Branch pickup
  • Garbage pickup from city property
  • Minor street and storm drainage repairs
  • Snow plowing
  • Street signs
  • Sewer cleaning
  • Fleet maintenance and repair
  • Water main maintenance, installation and repairs
  • Fire hydrant maintenance, installation and repairs.
  • Water valve maintenance, installation, and repairs.
  • Locating water lines for J.U.L.I.E.
  • Installation of residential and commercial water meters

Water treatment

This division is responsible for the maintenance, operation, and repairs to the following facilities:

Water Plant - 234 Union Street

  • Two booster stations
  • 7 wells
  • Four elevated tanks
  • One ground storage tank

Street Department

Supervisor of Buildings & Grounds: Jon Arbisi

This department has the following duties:

  • Leaf collection
  • Pool maintenance
  • Mowing parks, ditches
  • City Hall
  • Park buildings
  • Equipment upkeep/bleachers
  • Plantings around town
  • Mulch in parks

Waste Water Treatment

This division is responsible for the maintenance, operation, and repairs of the following facilities:

  • Waste Water Treatment Plant - 400 River Street - 3.3 MGD (million gallons a day) DAF, 9.0 MGD Storm Flows, screening grit removal, pre-aeration, primary clarification, conventional activated sludge, secondary clarification, bleach disinfection, aerobic and anaerobic digestion, sludge lagoon storage, CSO capture and recycle for treatment.
  • Sewage lagoons
  • CSO pumping and storage facility
  • Three combined sewer overflows
  • Eight lift stations
  • East Side Waste Water Treatment Plant - 2839 Eagle Drive - 1 MGD, flow equalization, Eutek grit removal, activated sludge (VLR), fine Screens, membrane bio-reactor, UV, cannibal solids handling

This team ensures the city provides a dependable water supply and meets or exceeds state and federal quality standards, and administers the city's pretreatment program which is regulated by the EPA. Administrative objectives are to protect the city's wastewater plant from pollutants that may interfere with plant operation, prevent pollutants that may pass through untreated from being introduced into the plant, and improve opportunities for the plant to reuse wastewater and sludges that are generated.
