Position Information

Salary:        Academy Entry Level - $74,900. The starting wage increases to $77,147 effective May 1, 2027, under the current contract.

                      Lateral Entry - Up to $90,114 with 5 years of experience, effective May 1, 2026. For employees with 5 years of experience, the starting wage                                                 increases to $92,817 effective May 1, 2027, under the current contract.

The La Salle Police Department is currently accepting applications for Lateral Entry Police Officers.

Department Overview:

The La Salle Police Department consists of 23 full-time employees, 22 of whom are sworn officers including a Chief, one (1) Commander, and six (6) Sergeants.
Officers enjoy working twelve-hour shifts and participating in extensive levels of training.

The Department also offers a variety of specialty positions:

Area Information:
The City of La Salle is a historic river city located at the major intersection of Interstate 39 and Interstate 80 in north central Illinois; with a population of 9,582 and an area of 12 square miles.

Job Requirements: 

  • Age: Must be at least 21 years old, and under 35 at the time of application. Applicants must be under the age of 35 years old at the last date of filing applications (10/16/2026) AND at such time as Final Eligibility Register is posted, unless they have been certified and employed as a full-time police officer for a municipality in the United States or are otherwise exempt by State Statute 65 ILCS 5/10-2.1-6.
  • Citizenship Required: Must be a U.S. Citizen or an individual who has permanent resident status and is legally authorized to work in the United States. Must under federal law, be authorized to obtain, carry, purchase, or otherwise possess a firearm. 
  • High School Grad/GED: High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED)
  • Driver's License: Must possess a valid Driver's License at the time of application with the ability to obtain an Illinois Driver's License upon time of hire. 
  • Ability to Read/Speak English: Yes
  • FOID: Must have a valid FOID by the time of final eligibility list. 
  • Character: Must have no felony convictions and be of good moral character.
  • Additional Requirements for Lateral Applicants:
    • At least two years of experience as a full-time sworn, certified law enforcement officer with an Illinois law enforcement agency. (Part-time certification does not meet this requirement), or be qualified to take the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board “Out of State Reciprocity” exam.

  • Written Exam - Tuesday, October 27th at 3:00P.M.
  • Fire and Police Commission Oral Interviews - Tuesday, November 10th 
  • Candidates receiving a conditional offer of employment shall be required to pass the following:
    • Background investigation
    • Psychological exam
    • Preemployment Physical examination and drug screening
